Gortin is preparing for the biggest night of the year planned for Saturday 30th November 2013.  Sparring in the Sperrins will see dozens of wannabe boxers taking to the stage to put on a great evenings entertainment of white collar boxing, all in aid of Gortin St Patrick’s and Badoney Ladies GAA Clubs.  This event, which is sponsored by Fit for Life personal training, will involve around 40 volunteers who are currently taking part in a punishing training regime under the expert guidance of Omagh Boys and Girls Boxing Club.  Preparations are also well underway for the event to be hosted from St. Patrick’s GAA Grounds which will benefit from the investment of funds raised. Tickets for Sparring in the Sperrins are already in big demand and will go on sale today, Thursday 14th November 2013, available from boxers and members of the organizing committee.

Chairman of Gortin St. Patrick’s GAA Club, Gabriel Treanor, thanked all boxers when he said, “We can’t thank enough the 40 volunteers going through blood, sweat and tears to bring us this exciting fundraising event.  We have to give a particular mention to those from other clubs who are standing beside our boxers from Badoney Ladies and Gortin St Patrick’s and giving of all the time and energy needed for this event.  This is another example of the GAA Community at its best.  I hear that the atmosphere at training is electric and we can’t wait to see some fine sporting contests. Roll on Saturday 30th November!”

The line up of bouts for Sparring in the Sperrins has not yet been released, but it set to produce some interesting battles.  Included in the ladies line-up is Tyrone Ladies Captain, Gemma Begley, who is lending her support to County Junior Champions of 2013, Badoney Ladies.  The men’s contests will see match up between Gortin and neighbouring rivals in Greencastle, Creggan, Carrickmore, Glenelly, Drumquin and the Moy.

Sparring in the Sperrins is set to raise funds for the future development of GAA activities in Gortin, where Badoney Ladies and Gortin St Patrick’s are working to meet the needs of 16 football teams.  This week, the organizing committee is seeking support from business and individuals to sponsor boxers, fights and take advertising space in the souvenior booklet which will be the focus of attention in many households in the run up to Christmas.  For information on the event and sponsorship opportunities, please check out facebook; Gortin FightNight.
