This year the Club introduced a new award in memory of our former player Michael McKenna, who played for St Patricks during the 1970’s and early 80’s and is remembered as a towering strength who was always there to offer a quite word of encouragement and support for team mates.
Players who had the privilege of playing along side Michael remember with great fondness how he would be the first to nurture young talent and make them feel part of the team. Michael has been described as a true gentleman, a gentle giant and a man with great kindness who would make a point of showing his support for his teammates, both in his quite words and in his actions.
Stories are told of Michael putting his hand on the shoulder of young players before a game to say – ‘You’ll do great and if you get into any bother, I’ll be there, right beside you’. A man of few words, but each one genuine and wholly positive.
It is with great pride that Gortin St Patricks GAA remembers Michael McKenna.
In Michael’s memory, a team spirit award is offered for the player who wears the jersey with pride, and displays some of his qualities which are-
